20. KAYASHIMA SHRINE

The Kayashima Shrine has been worshiped as the main shrine of twenty-nine nearby villages. It used to be called Hiezu Daimyojin, but its name was changed to the current name in the first year of the Meiji era.

蚊屋島神社は、近隣の２９の村の総社として崇拝を集めてきた神社です。昔は日吉津大神宮と呼ばれていましたが、明治元年に今の名前に改名されました。

The main deities are two goddesses, Amaterasu Oomikami and Takahime-no-Mikoto (the daughters of Ookuninushi-no-Mikoto, who is the main god of Izumo Taisha Shrine in Shimane Prefecture). There are a few more deities enshrined who are related to Izumo Taisha Shrine and Ise Jingu Shrine (located in Mie Prefecture).

御祭神は、天照大神（あまてらすおおみかみ）と大国主命の娘である高比売命（たかひめのみこと）の２柱の女神です。他にも出雲系の神と伊勢系の神が祭られています。

According to the legend, Ame-no-Kawahiko, the husband deity of Takahime-no-Mikoto (one of the main gods of the Kayashima Shrine), killed a pheasant that was sent from the heavens with a bow and arrow. 

伝説によると、御祭神の１柱である高比売命の夫神である天稚彦（あめのかわひこ）が、神の使いである雉を弓矢で撃ち殺してしまいます。

This arrow reached the heavens after it killed a pheasant. The god “Takamimusubi-no-Kami” picked it up and put a spell. He said, “This arrow should penetrate Ame-no-Kawahiko if his heart is wicked,” and threw it back to the world of the humans. 

その矢は天まで届きますが、高御産巣日神（たかみむすびのかみ）が真偽を確かめるために「もし天稚彦が邪心をもってこの矢を打ったのならば、この矢が奴に当たるように」とまじないをかけて下界に打ち返します。

Since Ame-no-Kawahiko had a particular ambition, the arrow penetrated him and caused his death.

とある野望を抱えていた天稚彦はその矢に射抜かれて死んでしまいます。

Because of this legend, the priests and followers of Kayashima Shrine are prohibited from eating pheasant meat. 

そのため、蚊屋島神社の神官や氏子は、雉肉を食べるのが禁じられています。

＊The name of one of the deities, Takahime-no-Mikoto, is the name used in the book Kojiki, the oldest history book in Japan. In Nihon Shoki, the history book written during the Nara Period, her name is Shitateruhime-no-Mikoto.

He was sent to pacify the world of humans, which was called “Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni”. Instead of completing his duty, he married Takahime-no-Mikoto, the daughter of Ookuninushi-no-Mikoto (the main deity of Izumo Taisha Shrine). He didn’t return to the world of the Gods, Takamagahara, for eight  years.

葦原中国（あしはらのなかつくに、地上世界を指す）の平定の為に遣わされた神でしたが、後に大国主神の娘、高比売命と結婚し、葦原中国を支配しようと企んで、8年たっても高天原（天上界、日本神話の聖地）に戻りませんでした。

Two deities in the Takamagahara (the equivalent of heaven), Amaterasu Oomikami and Takamimusubi-no-Kami, sent a pheasant named Nakime to ask Ame-no-Kawahiko to ask the reason why he was not returning. 

そこで天照大御神と高御産巣日神（たかみむすびのかみ）は、雉の鳴女（なきめ）を葦原中国に派遣して戻ってこない理由を尋ねさせました。

When the pheasant reached the world of the humans, Amenogusa (the goddess who served Ame-no-Kawahiko) heard a bird crying. She suggested that he kill it since it was an ominous bird. As she advised, Ame-no-Kawahiko killed the pheasant with the bow and arrow given to him when he left heaven.

雉が地上に降り立った時、その声を聴いた天稚彦の従者で女神である天佐具売（あめのぐさ）が、不吉な鳥だから射殺すようにと天稚彦に勧め、彼は遣わされた時に高皇産霊神から与えられた弓矢（天羽々矢と天之麻迦古弓）で雉を射殺してしまいます。

After the arrow killed the pheasant, it reached heaven and was found by Takamimushibi-no-Kami. Holding the arrow in the hand, he put a spell on it. He said, “This arrow should penetrate Ame-no-Kawahiko if his heart is wicked”. Then he threw it back to the world of the humans.

その矢は高天原まで飛んで行き、その矢を手にした高皇産霊神は、「天稚彦に邪心があるならばこの矢に当たるように」と誓約をして下界に落とします。

Since Ame-no-Kawahiko had the ambition to rule the world of humans, he was killed by the arrow while sleeping in the bedroom.

天稚彦は葦原中国の支配を企んでいた為、寝所で寝ていた所で矢に射られ死んでしまいました。
