13. AME-NO-MANAI SPRING

“Ame-no-Manai” is believed to be connected to the well of Takamagahara, where Japanese Gods live—the equivalent of Heaven. This name is given only to the cleanest, purest, and best water in all of Japan. 

「天の真名井」とは、高天原にあるとされる神聖な井戸のことで、古来清らかな水に与えられた最大級の敬称です。

Several Yayoi ruins have been excavated in the Sumida and Kawarada areas, where the Izumi River flows from this spring. This proves that this spring has been the source of people’s life and land development since ancient times.

この湧水から流れる泉川下流の田の角田や河原田からは弥生時代の遺跡が発掘されており、この水が原始時代の人たちの生活と土地開発の源であったことを物語っています。

Ame-no-Manai is also used as irrigation water for the rice fields in Yodoe Plain and rainbow trout farming. For local people in the village of Takaidani, it has been used as drinking water and Wakamizu, which is the first water to get on New Year’s Day.

天の真名井は、淀江平野の豊かな実りを支える灌漑用水やニジマスの養殖等にも利用されており、また、地元の高井谷では日々の飲料水・新春を迎える若水として生活の中に生きています。

It has been registered as one of the top 100 spring waters chosen by the Ministry of the Environment.
