About

The Yodoe Fishing Port has constructed about 250 years ago and is the oldest fishing port in Tottori Prefecture.

When Daisen Temple faith was at its prime time, people arrived at Yodoe Port (not yet a fishing port) with their cattle. A cattle market was held near the temple every spring and fall. Many small and large commercial ships arrived here on their way to Sakaiminato and Shimane Peninsula.

After the Meiji era, these commercial ships disappeared, and it became a fishing port.

There is a variety of fish brought to the port throughout the year.

Various forms of fishing are operated here, including gill netting, longline, pole-and-line, free diving, and small set-net fishing.

Octopus pot fishing is operated only in Yodoe in the prefecture.

Furthermore, there are top-class catches in the prefecture for pole-and-line fishing (trawling) for Spanish mackerel.

Many anglers enjoy fishing here as well. There are spots where you can enjoy fishing for various fish throughout the year.

QUIZ COMMENTARY (クイズ解説)

【Correct Answer】I. Miho Bay(美保湾)

A bay is part of the ocean and a lake forms its wide entrance. A smaller one is called a cove.

Miho Bay is a vast bay with a width of approximately 14km and a depth of 9.4km. It opens to the east-northeast and faces the Sea of Japan/East Sea/Sea of China. The Hino River flows into the southeast coast of the bay, and the northwest is connected to Nakaumi Brackesh Lake through the Sakai Channel.

The coast has many sandy beaches except around the Mihonoseki area on the north coast. Yumigahama Beach on the Yumigahama Peninsula has a long, crescent-shaped sandy beach.

The shoreline stretches from Tottori Prefecture to Shimane Prefecture. There is the city of Yonago on the southwest coast and the city of Sakaiminato on the northwest coast.

In addition, there are many ports in the bay, including Yodoe Fishing Port, Sakai Fishing Port, Nagahama Port, and Mihonoseki Port.
