QUIZ COMMENTARY (クイズ解説)

【Correct Answer】S. Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture

An abundance of mural pieces was found in the Kondo Building in Kamiyodo Haiji. It was discovered in later years that this mural was as old as the one in the Kondo Building of Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture.

Horyuji Temple is a World Heritage site designated national treasure and important cultural property because of the Kondo Building, Five-story Tower, Shaka-Sansonzo statues (depicting Prince Shotoku from the 6th century), and more. Especially the mural in the Kondo Building has also been registered as the nation’s important cultural property.

Founded in the 7th century, Horyuji Temple is a Buddhist facility that conveys the appearance of an ancient temple to the present day. It is also associated with Prince Shotoku.

It is estimated that the temple was built in 607AD based on the information on the Kondo Yakushi Nyorai statue and the Jogu Shotoku Hoo Teisetsuand (a biography about Prince Shotoku).

The Kondo murals were created in the latter half of the 7th century to the beginning of the 8th century.

Three Tatemochi Haniwa in Kamiyodo Hakuho-no-Oka Exhibit Hall have the shape of a human head on the square shield.

These were excavated from Tsunoda Ruin.

Two of them have crowns on their head and tattoos on their face.

In contrast, one of them has a topknot instead of a crown and no tattoos.

It is said that these differences represent their classes.
