07. ISHIUMA (National Important Cultural Property)

It is a 150cm long, 90cm high horse haniwa made of rock. It was found by Shogoro Tsuboi in 1902 at Amenokamigaki Shrine. Tsuboi was a professor at Tokyo Teikoku University and was also known as the first cultural anthropologist in Japan.

日本初の文化人類学者、坪井正五郎によって、1901年に学術上貴重であるとされた長さ150㎝、高さ90㎝の石製の馬埴輪です。

Looking at it carefully, you can see how the saddle, rein, and stirrup were carved.

鞍や手綱、鐙（あぶみ）などの馬具が彫られているのが確認できます。

It was presumed that this stone haniwa had been placed at the Ishiumadani Burial Mound around the 6th century and was worshiped as Ishiuma Daimyojin during the Edo period.

6世紀ごろ、石馬谷古墳に設置されていたと推測されています。また江戸時代には、石馬大明神として信仰されていました。

Unglazed Haniwa were most commonly used to decorate burial mounds. With the exception of the Ishiumadani Burial Mound in Yodoe, stone haniwa has been excavated from only a few prefectures on Kyushu Island, such as Fukuoka, Oita, and Kumamoto.

古来、古墳には素焼きの埴輪を設置したり埋蔵したりすることが多く、このような石製の埴輪が残っているのは、石馬谷古墳を除けば、九州に一体のみです。

Ishiuma was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1959.  

1959年に国指定の重要文化財となりました。

Please note that Ishiuma is stored in the warehouse of Amenokamigaki Shrine. If you want to see it, you can apply to the receptionist of 8. Kamiyodo Hakuho-no-Oka Exhibition Hall.

Sekijin-Sekiba is a type of Haniwa made of stone. 

In the middle of the Kofun period and later, it was often used as burial chamber décor,; used to decorate on and at the side of burial mounds in the northern Kyushu region. 

There were many different shapes found, including humans and animals.

石人石馬（せきじんせきば）は石で造られた埴輪の一種で、古墳時代中期以降、北九州地方を中心に用いられた、人・動物などをかたどった副葬品で、 噴墓の上や側面に置かれました。
