19. KAMENOKO SHRINE

One day during the Heian period (9th century–12th century), a white sea turtle suddenly appeared in this area. The provincial official at that time thought this was a very auspicious thing and changed the area’s name to Kamenoko (a turtle’s shell).

平安時代、この地域に海から白い亀が現れたことから、時の国守が「これはめでたい」と土地の名前を亀甲に改名したのが、名前の由来とされています。

Kamenoko Shrine is also famous for Sai-no-Kami (also known as Dousojin) statues. It is believed that Sai-no-kami protects you from sickness and disaster while you are traveling.

亀甲神社はサイノカミ(道祖神)でも有名で、病魔や災厄を遮り、行事の人の安全を守ると言われています。

There are so many Sai-no-Kami statues in Yodoe Town. Sixty-six out of seventy-two statues in the area are male and female.

米子市淀江町内のサイノカミの神体は、自然石に男女の神様を彫刻するものが圧倒的に多く、神体総数72基の中、66基を占めています。

The Sai-no-Kami statues in the Kamenoko Shrine are registered as the folk culture property of Yonago City.
