01. SITE OF YODOE BATTERY（National Historic Site）

“Odaiba” is the battery built at the end of the Edo era to prepare for the attacks of foreign ships. They were constructed throughout Japan and were eight of them in Tottori Prefecture.

「お台場」は、江戸時代の終わりごろに、外国船の来襲に備えて全国各地に造られた砲台の跡です。鳥取県内では8か所に築かれました。

Yodoe Battery, located at Imazu-Town in Yodoe, was built in 1863. About 65 meters long and 5 meters high of the original earthworks still remain.

淀江町今津にある淀江台場跡は、文久3(1863)年に築かれたもので、現在は、長さ約65メートル、高さ約5メートルの土塁が残っています。

Looking at drawings from the past, it had expanded on both sides like the wings of a bird. Today, we see the bottom of the original that faces the ocean. It is said that it used to be three times higher than it is now.

昔の絵図を見ると、現在の土塁の両端がさらに翼のように延びていたことがわかります。現存する部分は、海に面した方の下部であり、もとの高さは、現在の3倍くらいはあったといわれています。

Aka-tsuchi (red clay soil) used for the battery was transported from Mt. Bandayama in Daisen-Town. Mt. Bandayama is the mountain near the well-known ruin from the Yayoi era called “Mukibanta”.

台場の全面を覆っている赤土は、大山町の晩田山から運ばれたと伝えられています。

In the beginning, the battery was equipped with three cannons made nationally, and eight more were added later.

当初は国産の大砲3門が備えられ、後でさらに8門が増設されたようです。
